Description
A rich, dark chocolate cake made with black cocoa for a midnight hue, decorated to look like a black cat and topped with festive sprinkles.

- 3/4 cup black cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 cups unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup black cocoa powder (for frosting)
- 2 tbsp heavy cream
- 1/2 cup Halloween sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F and grease two 8-inch round cake pans, lining the bottoms with parchment paper.
- Sift together flour, black cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
- Cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy using a mixer.
- Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- Alternate adding the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the flour mixture.
- Divide batter evenly between the pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Beat frosting butter and powdered sugar together, then add black cocoa and heavy cream until smooth.
- Stack cake layers with frosting in between and cover the entire cake in black buttercream.
- Pipe two pointed triangles on top for ears and a curved strip on the side for a tail.
- Add candy eyes and a nose, then decorate with Halloween sprinkles.
